1. Executive summary
The Netherlands is a compact (18 million inhabitants), high-income and highly import-dependent market for household goods. Rotterdam is Europe's main gateway for Asian housewares, and Dutch buyers source globally. Total consumer spending on household appliances reached about US$3.5bn in 2024, while the non-electric housewares segment (kitchenware, tableware, storage, cleaning tools) is estimated at €2.0–2.6bn at retail value. The market has polarised sharply: discounters (Action, Wibra), the variety chain HEMA, drugstores and online platforms (bol, Coolblue) are gaining share, while traditional household-goods specialists are shrinking – CBS reports falling turnover in this store category throughout 2025. The bankruptcy of Blokker (397 stores) in November 2024 freed a large share of the market; the restarted Blokker (~48 stores), Xenos, Wibra and HEMA are absorbing this demand and are rebuilding or broadening their supplier bases. For foreign suppliers this creates two clear routes: (1) private-label supply to the large buying organisations (HEMA, Action, Wibra, Xenos, Superunie, DIY chains), which requires competitive pricing, compliance documentation and volume capability; and (2) branded entry via an importer/brand-builder (e.g. Koopman International, Pietercil, Redelaar, La Cucina) or directly via online marketplaces (bol, Amazon.nl). EU suppliers enjoy free movement of goods; non-EU suppliers must additionally handle customs, an EU responsible person under the GPSR and, for some product groups (e.g. Chinese ceramic tableware), anti-dumping duties.
