1. Executive Summary
Germany is the largest consumer market in the EU and one of the most important markets worldwide for housewares – kitchenware, cookware, tableware, storage, cleaning and laundry tools and small domestic appliances. With roughly 41 million households, high purchasing power and a strong culture of home cooking and baking, the market offers solid volumes. At the same time it is mature, price-competitive and highly regulated.
• Market size: Private household spending on glassware, tableware and household utensils amounted to about €13.6 bn in 2023 (Federal Statistical Office, national accounts). The narrower retail market for glass, porcelain, ceramics (GPK) and household goods (“Hausrat”) was €7.2 bn in 2023 at consumer prices (IFH Köln/BBE). Including home textiles, the housewares retail market is estimated at €11.9 bn for 2025 (Mintel). Small kitchen appliances add roughly €2 bn.
• Market trend: After a post-pandemic dip (–6.6 % in 2023), analysts expect stabilisation and renewed growth from 2026. Demand shifts towards value-for-money, durable and sustainable products, discounters and online.
• Key players: Strong domestic brands (Zwilling, WMF, Fissler, Fackelmann, Leifheit, Westmark, GEFU, Villeroy & Boch), powerful food retail and discount buying (EDEKA, REWE, Schwarz Group, ALDI), non-food discounters (Action, TEDi), drugstores, Tchibo and online platforms led by Amazon and OTTO.
• Opportunities: No-name/private-label suppliers can win volume through discount promotions, food retail and non-food discounters – usually via German import agencies. Brand owners gain access through housewares distributors and brand houses, the EK buying group, specialist online retailers, marketplaces and the Ambiente trade fair in Frankfurt.
• Legally compliant contact: Unsolicited advertising e-mails are prohibited in Germany even between businesses (§ 7 UWG) – a single e-mail can trigger a costly cease-and-desist letter. Chapter 11 shows the legally safe contact routes: supplier portals, a call to identify the buyer, letters and trade fairs.
• Access requirements: Food-contact compliance (Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, plastics Regulation (EU) 10/2011, German LFGB), the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), packaging registration (VerpackG/LUCID, PPWR from August 2026), WEEE/battery registration for electricals and CE marking. Non-EU suppliers additionally face customs duties, possible anti-dumping duties (e.g. Chinese ceramic tableware) and need an EU-based economic operator.
