Baby and Toddler Products in Sweden Market volume, key players, opportunities, market access requirements and a directory of Swedish importers, distributors and directly importing retailers for international suppliers of branded and private-label products Scope: all product categories presented at trade fairs such as Kind + Jugend (Cologne) – nursery equipment, strollers, car seats, nursery furniture, textiles, baby and children’s fashion, safety products, feeding and care, toys and gifts
Sweden is a small but highly attractive market for baby and toddler products: purchasing power is high, parents are well informed and safety-conscious, both parents take extensive parental leave, and Scandinavian design, sustainability and functionality are decisive purchase criteria. At the same time the market is mature and consolidating. With around 97,500 births in 2025 – the lowest figure in 23 years – volume growth has to come from value (premium, safety, sustainability) and from market-share gains rather than from demographics.
We estimate the Swedish retail market for the product scope of Kind + Jugend (nursery equipment, furniture and textiles, baby and toddler fashion 0–6 years, safety, feeding and care non-food, and toys for 0–6 years) at roughly SEK 14–16 billion (approx. EUR 1.3–1.45 billion) per year at retail prices. Online penetration is among the highest in Europe; the online pure player Jollyroom is the Nordic category leader, while omnichannel specialists (BabySam, Babyproffsen, Bonti, BabyV), the Lekia/Babya store network, pharmacies, grocery chains and variety discounters (Gekås Ullared, Rusta, Clas Ohlson) cover the rest of the market.
For new foreign suppliers the most promising entry routes are: (1) a Nordic distributor or agency that already supplies the specialist trade (e.g. ReiRei, 4P, BabyNord, SBA Baby, GBAB, Pro Support, Leklyckan, Micki), (2) direct listing with online and omnichannel specialists that import directly (Jollyroom, BabySam, Babyshop, Babyland, Lekia/Babya) and (3) private-label manufacturing for retailers with own brands (Jollyroom, pharmacies, grocery and variety retailers, children’s fashion chains).
Categories with particularly good prospects include rear-facing car seats and accessories, all-weather strollers and winter accessories, merino/wool and weatherproof outerwear, ergonomic carriers, sleep and safety products (including connected monitors), sustainable feeding products, perfume-free baby care, open-ended wooden and Montessori-style toys, and child accessories for cargo bikes and e-bikes. Market access is governed by EU harmonised product legislation; non-EU suppliers additionally need an EU-based responsible economic operator, customs clearance and must budget for 25 % import VAT and category-specific duties.
