1. Executive Summary
Mexico is Latin America's second-largest consumer market for baby and toddler products and a natural next step for suppliers already successful in Europe, North America or other Latin American countries. With about 131 million inhabitants and almost 1.7 million registered births per year, it combines a large absolute customer base with an increasingly urban, brand-aware middle class that buys through department stores, hypermarkets, specialised chains and – fast growing – marketplaces such as Mercado Libre, Amazon and the Liverpool marketplace. The key findings in brief: • Market volume: Indicative segment values for 2025 are USD 2.9 bn for baby apparel, USD 2.5 bn for baby care products, USD 0.9 bn for baby food, USD 0.3 bn for juvenile hard goods (strollers, car seats, nursery) and USD 1.9 bn for toys and games. Combined, the categories covered by this study amount to roughly USD 8–9 bn (segments partly overlap). • Demand trend: Births are falling (1.67 million in 2024, −8.5% year on year), so growth comes from value rather than volume: parents trade up to safer, better-designed and certified products. Premium car seats, travel systems, feeding/lactation, natural baby care and educational toys benefit most. • Competition: The mass market is served by domestic manufacturer-importers (Prinsel, Infanti/MEXEX, Evenflo) and multinational subsidiaries (Chicco, Dorel, Mattel, Hasbro, LEGO, Spin Master). Many European premium brands are present only selectively – there is room for differentiated brands with a clear safety or design story. • Trade policy creates a window for European and FTA-origin goods: Since 1 January 2026 Mexico applies tariffs of 5–50% on 1,463 tariff lines from countries without a free trade agreement (e.g. China, South Korea, India, Turkey). Toys now pay 30%, many textiles and apparel up to 35%, furniture 25–35%. Goods of EU, EFTA, UK, US/Canada or CPTPP origin keep preferential, mostly duty-free access. • Market access: Products must comply with Mexican Official Standards (NOM) – especially NOM-015-SCFI and NOM-252-SSA1 for toys, NOM-133-SCFI for walkers, strollers and playpens, NOM-004 for textile labelling – and carry Spanish labelling before customs clearance. A Mexican importer of record registered in the Importers' Register (Padrón de Importadores) is mandatory. • Route to market: For most foreign suppliers the recommended route is an exclusive or category-exclusive importer-distributor that already holds NOM certifications and retail listings, complemented by marketplace presence. Large retailers (Liverpool, Walmart, Chedraui, Soriana, Coppel, Juguetrón) are realistic direct customers for private label and seasonal toy programmes or once local stock and NOM compliance are secured. Section 6 contains a directory of more than 45 relevant importers, distributors, full-range wholesalers and directly importing retailers with website, general e-mail address, switchboard number and – where available – the link to the supplier registration form.
