A small, wealthy market between three of Europe's largest, where three official languages shape labelling and packaging. Covers channels, access requirements and a directory of Belgian importers.
Belgium is a small, wealthy and densely populated market of around 11.8 million inhabitants, located between three of Europe's largest markets. Its commercial particularity is first and foremost linguistic: the country has three official languages — Dutch, spoken by around 60% of the population in Flanders, French, around 40% in Wallonia and predominantly in Brussels, and German for a small community in the east. For a toy supplier, this shapes labelling, packaging and documentation from the very first order.
It is also a logistics hub heavily dependent on imports, with China alone supplying nearly half the imported value. A gap has opened recently: the average retail price has reached a record level while the average import price has fallen appreciably. The directory in chapter 8 lists Belgian importers, distributors, importing retailers and non-food wholesalers, distinguishing toy specialists from importers for whom toys are just one non-food category among many, and separating full-range importers, range specialists, institutional suppliers and large chains that import on their own account.
