A dense, highly fragmented restaurant market where access runs through the wholesaler. Covers channels, cash & carry, access requirements and a directory of Portuguese importers.
Portuguese commercial restaurants generated around EUR 14.5 billion in 2024, with average growth of approximately 2.9% a year between 2019 and 2024 and a projection of about EUR 17.1 billion by 2029. Restaurants and takeaway alone account for between EUR 11 and 12 billion, spread across more than 35,000 establishments — a high density and a highly fragmented business fabric.
For a foreign supplier, access is through the wholesaler. Makro, part of the METRO group, operates in cash & carry and develops private labels such as MasterChef, Gourmês and Amanhecer; Bidfood Portugal, part of the Bidcorp group and formerly Frustock, is the specialised distributor with the largest presence in the delivery channel. Being listed with one of these operators is the step that decides entry, not direct selling to the restaurant. This study presents the size and structure of the market, the main operators, the access requirements depending on the supplier's origin and the categories with the best prospects, and includes a directory of Portuguese importers and distributors in the HoReCa channel.
