A mature eating-out market growing mainly through prices. Covers hospitality channels, wholesalers and distributors, access requirements and a directory of Dutch importers.
Dutch consumers spent around EUR 23 billion on eating and drinking out in 2025, 3.9% more than the previous year, with a forecast of roughly EUR 23.7 billion for 2026 (FSIN). Growth in recent years came mainly from price increases rather than from more visits. Koninklijke Horeca Nederland reported a hospitality turnover of EUR 33.9 billion for 2025 across some 43,600 establishments; the classic hospitality segment — restaurants, cafés, bars and hotels — accounts for about EUR 12.5 billion of that.
The wholesale layer is concentrated at the top and fragmented below. Sligro Food Group is the clear market leader with about a quarter of the foodservice market, distantly followed by HANOS, Bidfood and cash-and-carry operator Makro; the Foodservice Alliance estimates the foodservice wholesale market at around EUR 10.9 billion. For a foreign supplier, market access is therefore decided at the wholesaler or importer, not in the kitchen. This study covers market size and channel structure, the access requirements for suppliers from the EU and from outside it and the product groups with the best prospects, and includes a directory of Dutch importers and foodservice wholesalers.
