Europe's leading out-of-home market, now growing in value rather than meals served. Covers channels, the distributors between manufacturers and kitchens, access rules and a directory of importers.
Out-of-home food consumption reached about €128.3 billion in France in 2025, up 4.2% year on year, for close to 12 billion meals served. Growth is now almost entirely driven by value: the number of meals served has remained virtually flat. Full-service commercial restaurants account for about €46.9 billion (+3.2%), fast food and counter service about €28.6 billion (+3.7%), and alternative channels — in-store takeaway, bakeries and similar — about €25.4 billion.
Between manufacturers and kitchens sits a distribution layer worth about €24.7 billion, which is steadily consolidating: the top five operators — METRO, Groupe Pomona, France Frais, Transgourmet and Distriboissons — now hold close to 58%. For a foreign supplier, that is where market entry is decided: a listing is won with a wholesaler or importer, not with the chef. This study presents the market's volume and structure, the main players, the access requirements by supplier origin (EU, non-EU Europe, outside Europe), the most promising product categories, and a directory of French importers and foodservice distributors.
