A small country with an unusually large gastronomy sector, driven by tourism. Covers channels, the distributors that supply kitchens, access rules and a directory of Austrian importers.
Austria is a small market by population — around 9.2 million people — but an unusually large one in gastronomy, because the country feeds far more people than it accommodates. In 2025 Austria recorded 157.27 million overnight stays and 48.17 million arrivals, both record highs. Some 55,000 foodservice businesses generate around EUR 14.5 billion in turnover and employ more than 153,000 people; together with accommodation, the hospitality sector reaches about EUR 23.3 billion.
Access runs through a manageable number of wholesalers: Transgourmet, METRO, Wedl, Eurogast, Kröswang and Kastner account for the bulk of national volume and together report more than EUR 3.8 billion in turnover. The channel has shifted markedly from cash-and-carry to delivered wholesale — among the leading groups, around 70 to 78 percent of business is now delivery. This study describes market volume and channel structure, the access requirements for suppliers from the EU and from third countries, and the product groups with the best prospects, and includes a directory of Austrian importers and gastronomy wholesalers.
