A small, affluent market where a few chains and buying groups control most volume. Covers food and non-food, retail and cash & carry, access requirements and a directory of Austrian importers.
Austria is a small but affluent market: around nine million inhabitants with high per-capita spending and a retail landscape in which a few chains and buying groups bundle the great majority of volume. For a foreign manufacturer that means fewer doors, but every listing decision carries correspondingly greater weight. The food retail sector is shaped by full-range retailers and discounters, while the cash & carry and delivered wholesale business opens access for foodservice, retail and resellers and is therefore often the more realistic point of entry.
This study looks at both halves of the sector, food and non-food, sets out market volume and channel structure, names the leading retail and wholesale players, explains the access requirements for suppliers from the EU, from non-EU Europe and from outside Europe, and contains a directory of Austrian FMCG importers and distributors.
