Germany depends almost entirely on imports for tropical fruit. Where the premium, speciality, organic and Fairtrade opportunities lie, which certifications open the door and how to reach German buyers.
Germany is one of the largest and most solvent markets for fresh fruit in Europe and, lacking its own tropical production, depends almost entirely on imports. For producers from Africa, Central and South America the market is therefore structurally attractive — yet at the same time fiercely competitive and demanding. The opportunities lie not in the low-margin mass business with bananas and pineapples, but in the premium and speciality segment, above all avocado, berries, mango and passion fruit, as well as in the organic and Fairtrade niches.
Certification is in practice the entry ticket: legally the phytosanitary certificate and compliance with maximum residue levels, on the trade side GLOBALG.A.P. and GRASP, and building on that organic and/or Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance. For newcomers the route almost always leads through an established importer; direct supply to the retail purchasing organisations — EDEKA Fruchtkontor, REWE Eurogroup — only becomes realistic with volume, full certification and references. What matters is selecting importers that genuinely take on new growers; the contact list in this study has been filtered and assessed on that basis.
