Baby & Toddler Products in Finland Market volume, key players, opportunities, market access requirements and a directory of Finnish importers, distributors and retail buyers – for foreign suppliers of branded and private-label products Product scope: all product groups presented at Kind+Jugend (Cologne) – baby equipment and prams, car seats and safety, nursery furniture and textiles, feeding and care, children’s and baby fashion, toys and games
Finland is a small (5.65 million inhabitants) but affluent, highly organised and quality-driven market for baby and toddler products. After more than a decade of falling birth rates, births have started to recover: according to preliminary THL data, 45,974 children were born in 2025 (+4.8 %), and Statistics Finland reported a further +8.3 % in January–April 2026. The total fertility rate rose from 1.25 to 1.30. For suppliers this means a stable-to-growing customer base after years of contraction, with a pronounced share of first-time parents –the buyers of complete equipment sets.
We estimate the Finnish retail market for the product groups covered by Kind+Jugend (excluding baby food) at roughly EUR 0.55–0.75 billion per year (retail value incl. VAT). Toys and games (approx. EUR 200–230 m) and baby/toddler apparel and footwear (approx. EUR 110–150 m) are the largest blocks, followed by baby care and hygiene, prams and car seats, nursery furniture and feeding/care accessories.
Distribution is concentrated. The two grocery groups S Group (SOK) and K Group (Kesko) together control roughly four-fifths of grocery retail and dominate mass-market toys, baby care and basic children’s clothing through Prisma and K-Citymarket hypermarkets. The discount chain Tokmanni is the price leader in toys and no-name goods. Baby equipment (prams, car seats, nursery) is sold mainly through specialists – above all Lastentarvike Oy, the country’s largest importer and specialist chain – and a group of strong independent specialists and web shops (A-T Lastenturva, Wauva, OZBaby, Ora, Vaunula, Muksumassi) plus the Nordic online leader Jollyroom. Premium toys and design products are channelled through niche importers such as Kiddex and Ketunleikki; mass toys through wholesalers such as Martinex, Toypap and members of the Finnish Toy Association.
Best opportunities exist for products that solve Nordic-specific needs (winter-proof prams and accessories, footmuffs, thermal and outdoor clothing, reflective safety items, rear-facing car seats), for demonstrably sustainable and non-toxic products (organic textiles, natural rubber, FSC wood, recycled materials), for compact and multifunctional products for urban flats, for development-oriented and Montessori-style toys, and for private-label programmes for S Group, K Group, Tokmanni, Jollyroom and importers’ own brands. The public day-care sector and the annual Kela maternity package tender are additional B2B channels.
Market access is governed by EU law: EU suppliers benefit from free movement of goods and only need to meet product-safety, chemical, labelling (Finnish and Swedish) and producer-responsibility rules. Suppliers from non-EU Europe additionally face customs formalities, but often duty-free access under free-trade agreements. Extra-European suppliers must also clear customs, pay duties per the EU tariff, appoint an EU-based responsible economic operator and usually provide social-compliance audits. Since 1 July 2026, low-value e-commerce parcels from outside the EU are subject to a flat EUR 3 customs duty per item.
