1. Executive Summary
Sweden is a mid-sized but highly developed and digitally advanced consumer health market with roughly 10.6 million inhabitants, high purchasing power and a strong culture of self-care. For foreign suppliers of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, food supplements, natural remedies, medical devices for self-care and pharmacy cosmetics, the market offers clear entry points – provided the supplier understands its particular structure: a consolidated pharmacy sector with four nationwide chains and three pure online pharmacies, a single-channel pharmaceutical wholesale system with only two distributors, and a limited but important OTC range sold in grocery stores and petrol stations. Market volume. The Swedish pharmacy sector turned over SEK 90 billion in 2025, of which SEK 75 billion in the outpatient pharmacy market. In the outpatient segment (SEK 68 billion excluding haemophilia and dose-dispensed medicines), OTC medicines accounted for SEK 5.5 billion (+2.7%) and other pharmacy goods – supplements, skincare, medical devices, baby care, etc. – for SEK 12.9 billion (+6.7%). Around 14% of OTC medicine sales take place outside pharmacies, so total OTC medicine sales are estimated at roughly SEK 6.4 billion (approx. EUR 0.58 billion). Including supplements, sports nutrition, natural remedies and dermocosmetics sold through grocery, health food stores, beauty retail and online, the wider Swedish consumer health market can be estimated at SEK 25–30 billion (approx. EUR 2.3–2.7 billion). Key dynamics. E-commerce already accounts for about 26% of pharmacy sales and 25% of OTC medicine sales – the highest share in Europe. Non-medicine 'other goods' are the fastest-growing pharmacy segment and make up almost 39% of online pharmacy sales. Pharmacies are expanding value lines and private labels to compete with grocery retail, and from January 2027 a new category of OTC medicines sold only with pharmacist advice ('farmaceutsortiment') is expected to open further switch opportunities. Opportunities for foreign suppliers lie above all in (1) differentiated branded products in fast-growing non-medicine categories (supplements, women's health, sleep and stress, gut health, dermocosmetics, sun care, self-tests), (2) private-label and value OTC lines for pharmacy chains and grocery, (3) online-first launches via Apotea, Apohem, MEDS, Bodystore and Lyko, and (4) in-licensing deals with Nordic specialty pharma companies for products that require a marketing authorisation. Market access depends primarily on product classification. OTC medicines and natural remedies require authorisation or registration by the Swedish Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket), with Swedish-language labelling. Food supplements, cosmetics and medical devices follow harmonised EU rules, but labelling must be in Swedish and an EU-based responsible economic operator is required for suppliers from outside the EU. Suppliers from non-EU Europe (United Kingdom, Switzerland, Turkey, Western Balkans) and from outside Europe face additional requirements – EU importer or representative, batch release, customs clearance and in some cases reinforced border controls – which are explained in Chapter 6. Chapter 8 contains a structured directory of around 30 Swedish importers, distributors, pharmacy chains, online retailers, health food chains and grocery buyers, each with website, switchboard telephone where available, general e-mail address or supplier portal, and the names of decision makers where these are publicly mentioned.
