The Canadian FMCG Market Fast-Moving Consumer Goods – Food and Non-Food A Practical Guide for International Suppliers and Manufacturers Market size · Leading players · Opportunities · Access requirements (EU vs. non-EU vs. overseas) · Directory of FMCG importers & distributors
1. Introduction and Scope This study is a stand-alone reference for international brand owners, manufacturers and exporters who are considering entering the Canadian market with fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). It covers the full FMCG spectrum – both food and non-food – and focuses on the practical questions a supplier asks first: how large is the market, who are the leading players, where are the openings for new brand and private-label products, what does it take to get products across the border and onto Canadian shelves, and – most importantly – which Canadian importers and distributors are able and willing to introduce foreign products at scale. FMCG importers and distributors deserve special attention because they hold the relationships that a newcomer lacks: they are already connected to retail chains, independents and – in many cases – the HoReCa/foodservice trade, and they can list and move new brands in large volumes, whether under the supplier's own brand or as private label. The directory in Section 8 profiles a set of relevant Canadian importers and distributors, each with a verified website and direct contact details. 2. What Is FMCG? “Fast-moving consumer goods” (FMCG), also called consumer packaged goods (CPG), are inexpensive products that consumers buy frequently and use up quickly. They sell in high volumes, carry relatively low unit margins, have short purchase cycles and depend on wide distribution, strong shelf presence and brand recognition. The category is conventionally split into food and non-food. Food and beverage Packaged and processed foods, snacks and confectionery, dry grocery and pantry staples, dairy and chilled products, frozen foods, and non-alcoholic beverages (water, soft drinks, juices, tea and coffee). Fresh produce, bakery, meat and seafood are usually handled as adjacent fresh categories. Non-food The main non-food FMCG groups relevant to this study are: personal care and cosmetics (skin care, hair care, oral care, colour cosmetics, fragrances); over-the-counter natural health and wellness products such as vitamins and supplements (excluding prescription medicines); household and cleaning products (detergents, cleaners, paper goods); and pet care (pet food, treats, supplies and accessories). Baby care, feminine care and general household consumables also fall within FMCG. 3. Market Size and Growth Canada is a mature, high-income consumer market of roughly 41 million people concentrated in a small number of metropolitan areas, with Ontario and British Columbia leading demand. Estimates of the FMCG/CPG market vary widely depending on scope and methodology, so the figures below should be read as orders of magnitude rather than precise values. • Consumer packaged goods (CPG): valued at about USD 126 billion in 2025 and projected to reach roughly USD 158 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of about 4.6% – slightly ahead of the global average (MarketsandMarkets). • Food & beverage retail: sales at Canadian food and beverage stores were already in the order of CAD 147 billion (2022) and have continued to grow with population and inflation (Statista). • Growth drivers: population growth and immigration, urbanisation, a fast-expanding e-commerce channel, and a clear consumer shift toward convenience, health, premium and sustainable products. Plant-based, functional and clean-label products, and better-for-you options generally, are expanding faster than the market as a whole.
