A compact eurozone market whose foodservice sector punches above its size thanks to tourism. Covers channels, retail groups that also supply HoReCa and a directory of importers.
Slovenia is a compact EU and eurozone market of roughly 2.1 million residents, but its foodservice sector punches well above that headcount. The restaurant and foodservice market was estimated at about USD 1.14 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at roughly 5.2% a year to around USD 1.77 billion by 2033, driven by record tourism and rising out-of-home consumption.
Retail is highly concentrated — Mercator, SPAR, Tuš, Lidl, Hofer, Eurospin and E.Leclerc — and several of these groups also run wholesale and cash & carry arms, so the same buying organisation can decide both a retail and a foodservice listing. Cash & carry is served by Mercator C&C and, notably, by METRO delivering cross-border from Croatia, a structural feature worth understanding before choosing a partner. This study covers market size and structure, the distribution channels, access requirements by supplier origin, the categories with the strongest prospects, and a directory of Slovenian importers and foodservice distributors.
