1. Executive Summary
France is one of Europe's three largest consumer markets for household goods, but it is a mature, price-driven and highly concentrated market. Demand for tableware and kitchen articles has been contracting since its post-Covid peak in 2023, while the discount channel and online marketplaces keep gaining share. For foreign suppliers this creates a two-speed opportunity:
• Volume opportunity: non-food discounters (Action, GiFi, Centrakor, La Foir'Fouille, B&M) and the central purchasing organisations of the food retailers (E.Leclerc, Carrefour, Les Mousquetaires, Coopérative U, Auchan, Lidl) buy large volumes of private-label and unbranded housewares, often through French importers such as JJA Group, Groupe Lebrun or Roldan.
• Value opportunity: innovative, sustainable or design-led branded products (non-toxic cookware, foodstorage solutions, clever kitchen gadgets, premium knives) can reach specialist networks (Culinarion, Zodio, Mathon), department stores and specialised distributors such as Groupe Bastide 1880, Chevalier Diffusion, YLIADES (Côté Table, Comptoir de Famille) or Delta (Livoo).
• Market size: tableware sales in France reached about €1.1 bn excl. VAT in 2025 (-3 %); small domestic appliances €4.41 bn (+2.9 %). French imports of tableware, kitchen articles and decorative household items rose to €4.45 bn in 2025 (+8 %); imports of cookware and kitchen utensils alone jumped 32 % to €1.0 bn.
• Key access issues: EU food-contact rules, the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (an EUbased responsible person is mandatory for non-EU suppliers), French-language labelling, the French packaging EPR (Triman/Info-tri, producer ID), anti-dumping duties on Chinese ceramic tableware (renewed in October 2025) and the tough annual negotiation and payment-term rules of French retail law.
