Denmark is a small but affluent, design-conscious and highly digital market for baby and toddler products. With around 6.0 million inhabitants, one of the highest per-capita purchasing powers in the EU and a strong culture of quality, safety and sustainability, it rewards suppliers who combine functional design with verified product safety and credible environmental credentials.
Key facts for foreign suppliers:
• Births are rising again: 59,443 children were born in 2025, 2,364 more than in 2024 (+4.1 %). The total fertility rate rose to 1.506 (2024: 1.466). Statistics Denmark projects around 64,000 births in 2030.
• Estimated market volume for the Kind + Jugend product scope (nursery equipment, furniture, textiles, feeding and care accessories, safety, baby and children's fashion 0–6 years and toys for 0–6 years): approx. DKK 6.8–8.4 billion (EUR 0.9–1.1 billion) at retail prices incl. 25 % VAT (own estimate, see chapter 2).
• Concentrated specialist retail, strong online: BabySam is the leading baby-equipment chain; online specialists (Luksusbaby, Jollyroom, Kids-world, Coolshop) and the Salling Group (Bilka, Føtex, Netto and the BR toy chain) dominate volume. Well-established Danish distributors such as Maki, Scandinavian Baby Products and BabyDan open doors to 1,500+ retail customers.
• Strong domestic brands: Danish design brands (e.g. Konges Sløjd, Liewood, Done by Deer, That's Mine, Sebra, Flexa, Bibs, Hevea, Filibabba) set high standards in design and material quality. Foreign suppliers win with clear differentiation – innovation, certified safety, price-performance or niche specialisation.
• Opportunities exist for both branded products (premium nursery, functional PFAS-free outerwear, natural and educational toys, travel and bike accessories) and no-name/private label (Salling, Coop, Lidl, Rema 1000, BabySam own products, OEM programmes of Danish distributors).
• Market access is EU-harmonised (CE, GPSR, EN standards, REACH) plus Danish specifics: safety information and warnings in Danish, the national PFAS ban for clothing and footwear in force since 1 July 2026, extended producer responsibility for packaging and consumer-driven chemical scrutiny (Forbrugerrådet Tænk, Nordic Swan Ecolabel).
• Recommended entry route: an exclusive Danish or Nordic distributor for hardgoods and toys; an agency for fashion; direct negotiations with BabySam, Salling Group and the online specialists for suppliers with sufficient volume and Danish-language compliance. Denmark is often used as a test market and springboard for Sweden, Norway and Finland.
