HoReCa & Foodservice Market - Japan

Japan's total food market was valued at roughly USD 421 billion in 2024, and foodservice is the larger half of it: about USD 228 billion, or 54%, against USD 193 billion in retail (USDA FAS). Hotel, restaurant and institutional foodservice sales reached about USD 226 billion in 2023, up roughly 16% year on year as dining out and inbound tourism recovered; independent market trackers place the foodservice market at approximately USD 256–289 billion for 2024–25, the spread reflecting different channel definitions rather than disagreement about direction.

For a foreign supplier, Japan rewards precision over volume: specification, consistency and documentation carry more weight in a listing decision than price alone. Cash & carry operators such as Gyomu Super (Kobe Bussan), A-Price and Hanamasa, along with the Costco club channel, serve independent operators, while delivered wholesalers and specialist importers cover the rest. This study sets out market size and structure, profiles the players that matter, explains the access requirements for suppliers from the EU, from non-EU Europe and from outside Europe, identifies the categories with the strongest prospects, and provides a directory of Japanese importers and foodservice distributors.
