1. Executive summary
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with more than 230 million inhabitants, a median age below 20 and fast urbanisation. Its fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market is valued at around USD 25 billion and is the second largest in Africa after South Africa. After the currency devaluation and record inflation of 2023/2024, the leading manufacturers returned to profit in 2025, inflation fell to below 20 % and the naira stabilised. For foreign suppliers the market offers volume and growth, but access is more regulated than in almost any other African market: • Product registration: every packaged food, beverage, cosmetic, household chemical and supplement must be registered with NAFDAC before shipment – only through a Nigerian company (importer or agent) that holds the registration. • Import prohibition list (since 1 April 2026): 17 product groups from outside ECOWAS may not be imported at all – among them sugared and flavoured non-alcoholic beverages, tomato products, refined vegetable oils (olive oil excepted), sugar in retail packs, soaps and detergents, cocoa products and finished medicines. • No trade preferences for Europe: Nigeria has not signed the EU–West Africa Economic Partnership Agreement. EU, UK, Swiss and Turkish goods pay the full ECOWAS external tariff plus surcharges. • Distribution: around 90 % of FMCG sales still go through open markets and small shops. A strong local importer or distributor is therefore not optional but the key success factor. Good opportunities exist for snacks, confectionery and biscuits, breakfast products, dairy powders, canned fish and canned foods, olive oil, sauces and seasonings, wine and spirits, skincare and dermocosmetics, hair care, baby care, supplements and pet food – ideally in small, affordable pack sizes. Private-label suppliers find buyers among digital B2B distributors and retail chains that are building own brands. Chapter 8 lists importers, distributors and retail key accounts with contact details and a classification by channel, product focus and brand-building orientation.
