France is one of the three largest European markets for baby, toddler and children’s products. Although the birth rate is falling – 643,905 births in 2025, around 24% fewer than at the 2010 peak, with a fertility rate of 1.56 children per woman – spending per child is rising, parents are older (average age at birth 31.2 years) and grandparents play an important role as buyers. The result is a value-driven market in which premium, safe, durable and sustainable products gain share while volume declines. The relevant market (the product scope shown at trade fairs such as Kind+Jugend in Cologne) can be broken down into four blocks: (1) baby equipment or “puériculture” – strollers, car seats, nursery furniture, feeding, bathing, sleep and safety products – estimated at around EUR 850 million; (2) the wider “baby markets” including textiles, infant nutrition, hygiene and early-age toys, which Circana puts at around EUR 2.85 billion; (3) the toys and games market, which reached a record EUR 4.7 billion in 2025 (+7.1%); and (4) children’s and baby fashion, a multi-billion- euro segment dominated by French chains and own brands. Distribution is concentrated. Specialist chains (Aubert, Bébé 9, Autour de Bébé, Orchestra, Vertbaudet) account for roughly two thirds of puériculture sales; children’s fashion is dominated by French specialist chains (Kiabi, Okaïdi/IDKIDS, Tape à l’œil, Sergent Major, DPAM, Jacadi, Petit Bateau); toys are sold through specialist chains (King Jouet, JouéClub, La Grande Récré, Picwic, Smyths), hypermarkets and online. Discounters (Action, Gifi, B&M, Stokomani, Lidl, Aldi) are important buyers of no-name and private-label products. For foreign suppliers the best entry routes are: (a) a French or Benelux-based distributor/brand house that already serves the specialist channel (for branded, innovative hard goods), (b) direct listing with a specialist chain or its buying cooperative, (c) private-label and own-brand programmes of retailers and discounters (for no-name suppliers), and (d) marketplaces (Amazon, Cdiscount, Vertbaudet, Aubert) to test demand. Market access is governed by EU harmonised product-safety law (GPSR, Toy Safety Directive/Regulation, EN standards, REACH), complemented by specific French rules: French-language labelling, the French decree on childcare articles, extended producer responsibility (EPR/“REP”) registration with a unique identifier, Triman/Info-tri marking and – for textiles – the new anti-ultra-fast-fashion law of July 2026.
