1. Executive Summary
Singapore is a small but affluent, highly import-dependent market for baby and toddler products. With roughly 30,000 live births a year, 6.2 million inhabitants and one of the highest per-capita incomes in Asia, the market rewards quality, safety, design and convenience rather than volume. Practically all non-food baby and toddler products are imported, and the country charges no customs duty on them – only the 9% Goods and Services Tax (GST) at import. Market volume. Based on published segment data, the core baby and toddler market (baby food, baby and toddler apparel, toys for toddlers and young children, baby safety products, baby toiletries) is worth roughly EUR 370 million a year. Including nappies and wipes, strollers and car seats, nursery furniture, feeding accessories and maternity products, the total addressable market for the categories covered in this study is estimated at EUR 550–700 million (approx. SGD 0.8–1.0 billion) at retail prices. The overall toys and games market (including video games) reached SGD 1.23 billion in 2025. Structure. Distribution is concentrated: a handful of specialist chains (Mothercare, Kiddy Palace, Motherswork, Toys"R"Us/Babies"R"Us), Japanese and local department stores (Takashimaya, Isetan, OG, BHG, Mustafa), grocery and drugstore chains (FairPrice, DFI Retail Group with CS Fresh/Giant/Guardian, Sheng Siong, Watsons) and the marketplaces Shopee, Lazada and Amazon.sg. Several of the leading specialist retailers are also exclusive importers and distributors for dozens of brands, which makes them the natural first contacts for foreign suppliers. Opportunities. Falling birth numbers (resident total fertility rate 0.87 in 2025) are offset by premiumisation, high spending per child, multiple gift-givers per child (parents, grandparents, relatives) and strong government baby support. The best prospects are premium and design-led nursery and travel gear, space-saving and multi-stage products suited to compact high-rise flats, certified-safe car seats and sleep products, feeding and breast-pump innovations, natural/organic skincare, sustainable textiles, and educational, wooden and STEM toys. Private label is relevant for retailer house brands (FairPrice, Watsons, Guardian, Mothercare group) and for importers that build their own brands. Market access. There is no pre-market approval for most non-food baby products. General consumer goods – toys, childcare articles, furniture, textiles – must meet at least one recognised international, regional or national safety standard under the Consumer Goods Safety Requirements Regulations (CGSR), and authorities run active post-market surveillance. Separate regimes apply to infant formula and baby food (Singapore Food Agency), baby cosmetics (Health Sciences Authority notification), certain electrical appliances (SAFETY Mark), wireless devices such as baby monitors (IMDA) and child car seats (recognised vehicle-restraint standards). Origin. Because Singapore applies zero duty to these goods, the supplier's origin rarely matters for import costs. It matters for standards documentation (EN, ASTM, ISO and AS/NZS reports are all accepted), consumer perception (European, Japanese and Korean brands command premium prices) and logistics. EU suppliers benefit from the EU–Singapore Free Trade Agreement and familiarity with EN standards; non-EU European suppliers from the UK and EFTA agreements; non-European suppliers mainly from close regional logistics and, in the case of the US, Japan, Korea and Australia, strong brand recognition. Directory. Chapter 9 lists 30 importers, distributors, retailers that import directly and marketplaces, classified as specialist importers, specialist retailers, full-range/generalist importers and large retailers, and online platforms, with website, general e-mail address and central telephone number where publicly available and links to supplier registration pages where they exist.
