1. Executive Summary
Canada is a mid-sized but affluent and highly regulated market for baby, toddler and children's products. With around 41.5 million inhabitants and roughly 372,000 births in 2025 (+1.6% on 2024), the number of newborns is stable despite a record-low total fertility rate of 1.26 children per woman. Parents are older (average maternal age 31.9 years), have higher incomes and spend more per child – a structural driver for premium, safety-certified and sustainable products. The addressable market for the product universe presented at trade fairs such as Kind+Jugend (Cologne) –baby gear, nursery furniture, textiles, feeding, care, safety, baby & toddler fashion and infant/preschool toys – is estimated at approx. CAD 4.5–5.5 billion (≈ EUR 2.8–3.4 billion) at retail prices in 2025, excluding baby food and diapers. The toy market grew strongly in 2025 (Circana-tracked sales +14% to about CAD 2.68 billion, with building sets +25% and games/puzzles +56%). The retail landscape is consolidating: Hudson's Bay was liquidated in 2025 and Toys"R"Us/Babies"R"Us Canada entered creditor protection in February 2026. Volume has shifted to Walmart, Amazon.ca, Costco, Canadian Tire and Loblaw/Shoppers Drug Mart, while independent specialists (Snuggle Bugz, West Coast Kids, Clément, Mastermind Toys) and specialised distributors (e.g. Kidcentral Supply, Maighan Distribution, Kroeger Marketing, Playwell, ÎLO) are the main gatekeepers for new international brands. Market access is demanding but transparent: all products must comply with the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act and product-specific regulations (cribs, cradles & bassinets; strollers; playpens; toys; phthalates; lead), car seats require Transport Canada's National Safety Mark, and labelling must be bilingual (English/French) – with stricter French-language rules in Quebec since June 2025. EU suppliers benefit from CETA (0% duties on practically all relevant goods); non-EU European suppliers from the UK, EFTA and Ukraine agreements; extra-European suppliers face MFN duties (e.g. up to 18% on apparel, 8% on rideon toys) unless covered by CPTPP, CUSMA or other agreements. Since 8 September 2026, Canada applies counter-tariffs of up to 50% on numerous US-origin goods including furniture and apparel – a window of opportunity for European and Asian suppliers to replace US sources. Best prospects: Scandinavian/European design nursery furniture and textiles, organic and GOTS-certified baby clothing, cold-weather products, silicone feeding & teething, postpartum and breastfeeding products, sleep solutions compliant with Canadian sleep-product rules, lightweight travel gear, wooden/Montessori and STEAM toys, games and puzzles, and value private-label programmes for mass and discount retailers.
