The Romanian HoReCa / Foodservice Market A Reference Guide for Foreign Suppliers of Branded and Private-Label Products Market volume · Key players · Opportunities · Access requirements · Importer & distributor directory
Romania's commercial foodservice sector was estimated at approximately RON 38 billion in 2023 — roughly USD 8.4 billion, or about EUR 7.5 billion in comparable food-services revenue terms — and is forecast to keep growing. The structural point for an exporter is the country's import dependence: agricultural and food imports reached around USD 15 billion in 2024, up roughly 4 to 5% year on year, with about 80% sourced from other EU member states, and the agri-food trade deficit widened to about EUR 4.8 billion. Local production cannot bridge seasonal gaps, so imported supply is not a marginal category here. Two channels dominate professional supply. Cash-and-carry is led by Metro and Selgros, and above it sits a tier of large full-range importer-distributors — Interbrands Orbico, Macromex and Transilvania General Import among them — that handle importation, customs and national distribution on behalf of foreign brands. For a new supplier the practical question is which of the two routes fits the product and the volume ambition. This study covers market size and structure, the leading players, access requirements differentiated by supplier origin, the product groups with the strongest prospects, and a directory of Romanian importers and foodservice distributors.
